Germany at a Glance
· The Federal Republic of Germany lies in the heart of Europe and is a cosmopolitan, democratic country with a great tradition and a lively present. Germany has one of the world’s strongest economies and offers an innovative research and education landscape. At the same time it has a strong creative economy and a dynamic cultural scene. Germany is the European Union’s most populous nation with 82 million inhabitants.· Many pioneering inventions were created in Germany. The list of German Nobel Prize winners is long – sixty-eight alone in the field of science and medicine. These include Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, Robert Koch, Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and Harald zur Hausen. And Germany isn’t called the “land of poets and thinkers” for nothing. It has produced great philosophers like Kant, Hegel and Adorno, poets like Goethe, Heine and Brecht, and renowned composers, such as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.
· The German Higher Education System
· University of applied sciences, college of technology, university, university of cooperative education – the German higher education system has many facts, many different types of institution. This diversity enables students to select the best course for their needs. If you put more emphasis on practical knowledge, then you will be in good hands at a university of applied sciences; if you are interested in theoretical research, then a university is the place for you.
· Universität
· Research centres: the university is the traditional form of higher education institution. Germany’s 102 universities closely link research and teaching. Most universities offer the full range of subjects. However, a university with a strong technological orientation is known as Technische Universität (TU, technical university) or Technische Hochschule (TH, college of technology). Compared to universities of applied sciences, they place greater emphasis on basic research.
Studying in Germany as an International Student
Germany is one of the leaders in the international competition for the world’s best brains. It has got a lot to offer. With more than 300 institutions of higher education it is one of the leading countries in the field of research, science and technology.
Studying in Germany no longer means studying in German medium alone, over 300 International Degree Programmes offer courses which are entirely or partly taught in English. These courses are offered in various disciplines, especially in Engineering, natural sciences, computer sciences and economics and lead to internationally recognized Bachelor or Master degrees or even to a PhD.
Universities are state-funded, therefore, low tuition fee is charged. You only have to bear your living expenses, such as accommodation, food, transport and health insurance. Special student discounts for various services help to make studying in Germany less expensive than you would have expected. Germany has much more earning opportunities while being student as compared to other traditional countries for higher education.
Advantages of studying in Germany
Free university. This is unique in the developed countries. Germany universities are open to all students. There is no examinations and demand for professional experience. Through the credit system set up, students learn to manage their own time and calmly finish their studies. This will undoubtedly get rid of the huge economic burden and mental stress.
Low cost of living.
German government allows students to be employed and be given the minimum
standard of pay. So for the first year of study in Germany, in addition to the
10,000 mark that you prepared for your cost of living, the remaining amount
will come from your wage.
Easy to earn a Master’s
degree. Students who graduated can receive a master’s degree directly
after graduation without having to take a test that causes big trouble. This is
very attractive especially for foreign students.
Developed economy and leading
academic degree. Germany’s per capita GNP is one of the first
or one of the highest in the world. It relies on the strength of its education
and its strong foundation in science and technology. Germany ’s high quality
education has been recognized worldwide

German Universities have major intake in the month of March
& September every year.

would range from 500 to 800 Euros per semester, private university 1500 Euros
to 12000 Euros and for MBA 500 Euros to 30000 Euros

Germany having no tuition fee for Bachelors, Masters & PhD’s
Accommodation
There are two types of student accommodation in Germany:
dormitories located on or near the university campus and private accommodation
in a flat or an apartment. To save money and to get bigger flats, students
often set up an apartment-sharing community and live together. This enables
them to stay without their parents.
Rental charges
currently range from €180 to €250 per month, including costs for electricity,
gas, water etc. If rooms are furnished, the landlord is likely to ask for a
deposit which is usually of one month’s rent. This is returned to you on
departure, as long as the room is left in a satisfactory condition and all rent
payments have been made.
If you arrive in Germany and have not rented a room yet,
you first have to find a place to stay, you can either stay in a hotel or
guesthouse (costing about €15 – €85 per day) or at a youth hostel. To stay in a
youth hostel, you need to buy a youth hostel pass which costs around €12.50 for
students under the age of 27 including breakfast.

rankings compiled by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE). The CHE
list is considered the most comprehensive and most detailed comparison of
German-speaking universities and universities of applied sciences. It covers a
total of 35 subjects and can thus help three-quarters of all new students. In
addition to facts about courses, teaching, facilities and research, the ranking
incorporates more than 250,000 students’ appraisals of the study conditions at
their higher education institution as well as the reputation of departments
among professors of individual subjects.
